Week 1: Story Board

The most important factor that I was considering while deciding what times to film was the time of day. For the first half of our opening scene we had to film during the night. The darkness would create the perfect menacing mood we need to create tension from the very beginning that leads into the chaos. To contrast this the second half would be filmed during the day to lift the tone and instill a light hearted mood into the audience to align with the scene.      In order to evoke certain emotions were going to be utilizing multiple different camera shots, angles, and framing during our opening. This will be particularly useful for portraying conflicts between the characters and highlight their relationships and emotions. For example, we plan to use juxtaposition framing to visually represent the separation between characters, despite their interactions. We'll also be using POV shots to allow the audience to experience firsthand what the ch...

Week 1: Character Analysis

Image
Daniel is a man who deeply values first impressions. He is typically wearing business casual outfits that radiate power but without trying too hard. He is an individual who is deeply egotistical and cares more about his public image than being a good husband to his wife. He works a 9-5 in the office and holds traditional family values especially when it comes to his role in the home and his wife's as a stay a home mom.      He is a curious man who believes that his actions are never wrong and was raised with the same family structure as a kid. He gets in drunken fits sometimes but he always makes sure to apologize to his wife with expensive gifts the next day, and that makes everything better.. right? Of course, he's a great hard working man!      This is a very similar representation to what I think of when I think of Hailey's character. She is a stay at home wife who would be expected to have dinner ready for Daniel after work a...

Week 1: Genre Research

The opening scene of A Quiet Place (2018), directed by John Krasinski, was one of the most innovative horror movies of the century. The film sets itself apart from typical horror movies by relying on suspense and silence rather than gore and slashers. Despite our film opening not exactly being horror, building suspense is still incredibly important especially when displaying a domestic violence situation. I decided to watch this opening and take notes so that our opening could capture the audiences attention and make them worry for our protagonist. My analysis will explore how these techniques work together to establish the film’s tone and theme.     One of the best parts of the opening scene is the camera work, the dir...
