Week 1: Genre Research

The opening scene of A Quiet Place (2018), directed by John Krasinski, was one of the most innovative horror movies of the century. The film sets itself apart from typical horror movies by relying on suspense and silence rather than gore and slashers. Despite our film opening not exactly being horror, building suspense is still incredibly important especially when displaying a domestic violence situation. I decided to watch this opening and take notes so that our opening could capture the audiences attention and make them worry for our protagonist. My analysis will explore how these techniques work together to establish the film’s tone and theme.

One of the best parts of the opening scene is the camera work, the director is frequently using tight close-up shots when showing the families faces. This is done intentionally to emphasize how vulnerable they are in the moment and to intensify a scenario. The close-up shots allow the audience to feel the characters raw emotion with or without dialogue. On the other hand, the director uses low-angle shots of the mysterious creatures to create a sense of power and control. By placing the main characters in the lower third of the frame, the camera highlights just how isolated they are from any help. Slow zoom-ins are used to build suspense, drawing attention to both the characters and the mise en scene, heightening the tension as the audience anticipates the lurking feeling of danger.

The film techniques used also play a major role in creating suspense throughout the opening. The slow paced, lingering shots of the family are interrupted by sudden cuts when the creature strikes. The intense contrast between calm and chaos shows just how unpredictable this apocalyptic world is, which unsettles the audience even more. It also shows just how fast joy and peace and be ripped from ones hands. In relation to our opening this is very similar to living with an abusive person with chronic mood swings, with high highs and low lows. Cross-cutting between the main family and their surroundings also builds tension as the audience is aware of the creatures presence while the characters are not, creating dramatic irony.

Sound design in A Quiet Place is also very crucial in building the film’s atmosphere. The opening starts off entirely silent making even the simplest of noises seem loud. This sound effect creates heightened senses and awareness that is influencing the films tension, and typically makes the audience nervous and/or jumpy. The strikingly loud noises, like the creatures' attacks, provide a sharp contrast to the peaceful silence which adds another shock factor; noises being used as jump scares. The use of sound, is one of the film’s most effective tools in making the audience feel the characters’ constant fear.

The mise-en-scène of the opening scene also reinforces the film’s themes. The lighting is natural and dim, casting shadows that suggest danger lurking without being too direct. The characters’ clothing is simple and muted, reflecting the harshness of their world. The setting, an abandoned rural town, is filled with miscellaneous objects, like children’s toys, which may seem random at first but serve as subtle reminders of the life before the creatures took over. These elements add a layer of emotional depth to the film, suggesting that the family is not just fighting for survival but also mourning their past.

A Quiet Place was directed by John Krasinski and features cinematography by Charlotte Bruus Christensen. The film was produced by Platinum Dunes and Sunday Night Production. It was distributed by Paramount Pictures. The film’s success shows that there is an audience for horror films that focus more on psychological tension and character development than on gore. Which is very useful when taking into consideration the over all message of our film opening. Its innovative approach to the genre resonated with both critics and audiences, earning nominations and awards, including an Academy Award for Best Sound Editing.

The opening credits of A Quiet Place are minimalist, featuring simple white text on a black background, which creates an unsettling vibe from the beginning. The lack of elaborate visuals reflects the film’s theme of simplicity and silence. This understated approach aligns with the film’s overall aesthetic, reinforcing the sense of isolation and dread that ultimately haunts the overall narrative.

In conclusion, the opening scene of A Quiet Place sets the stage for an emotional survival story that will deeply impact the audience. Through the films use of camera work, editing, sound design, and mise-en-scène, the film immediately immerses the audience in its world of silence and fear. The film’s ability to build tension through silence and sound makes it truly one of a kind. This also taught me that in order to create emotions the audience must be immersed into the story through these techniques and I am already planning on how to incorporate them into our opening!
