Week 3: First Day Of Filming
I was honestly very nervous to play this role especially being an abuse drunk and thankfully throughout these scenes Hailey was there for me and really provided emotional support to ensure the movie was filmed efficiently. We spent a lot of time going over the choreography of the fight sequence to ensure that it looked as real as possible for the audience while being as safe and comfortable for both of us as possible.
Filming emotionally charged scenes can leave you feeling very drained as an actor, and there were a couple of occasions when I struggled to put to rest the strong emotions that were being drawn out during rehearsal. Hailey's continued support and sensitivity made it much easier for us to create a work environment that felt safe and productive as well Creating and producing a film project for school can be exciting as it brings together a lot of creativity, teamwork, and quite a bit of chaos. Recently, I had the chance to work with two amazing co-stars (Chris and Hailey) on a short film for class. Our project tackles a serious subject matter since it deals with domestic issues, allowing us the opportunity to explore deeper characterizations and stronger emotions than what might normally be done in a more light-hearted way. Below are some examples from various scenes that I filmed and how they helped me develop new skills.
The film begins with an intense premise. I play a drunk and abusive husband and Hailey plays my wife. The film's plot reaches a pivotal moment when Hailey chooses to fight back against the abuse. With Chris also providing his own character, we delve into a story that explores the power of strength, perseverance, and standing up against violence toward others.
The beginning of the film is the most intense. The initial scene is shot in a dark living room, which reflects the darkness found in the husband's home. I needed to find the right way to portray my character as being angry. This was certainly an eye-opening experience, and presented some challenges in terms of how to deliver an authentic performance. Because of the intensity needed in this particular scene, we shot this scene several times until we arrived at the necessary level of emotion.
